Jimin: 30 August Year 19

While Hoseok was taking a phone call, I played around and kicked his shadow that was pinned to the ground. He giggled with a proud face. It took us about two hours to get from school to my house. If we rode the bus, it would take less than 30 minutes. It would only take us 20 if we stuck to main roads. Yet Hoseok insisted on turning through the winding alleyways, going over the low hills, and crossing pedestrian overpasses. It had been a year since I was discharged from the hospital and changed schools. The school was far from my house, and I didn’t know anyone but I thought it was fine. I’d changed schools multiple times. Plus, I had no idea when I’d be admitted to the hospital again, so I didn’t think much of it. 

 

And then I met Hoseok. It was a little after the new semester started. Hoseok approached me casually and walked with me for two hours. I learned much later that his house wasn’t even in the same direction. I couldn’t bring myself to ask him why he walked with me. Nonetheless, I wished that our shadows would continue to walk side by side under the sun for these two hours. Even if it was just a day longer. 

 

Hoseok was still on the phone. I kicked his shadow again and ran away. Hoseok ended his call and began to chase me. The hot sun slowly melted our ice cream, and the sound of the cicadas filled our ears. I was suddenly very anxious. How many days like this were left?
