Hoseok: 25 February Year 22

My entire world changed after my nineteenth birthday. I was no longer a shelter kid and could no longer live at the orphanage. I found a place to stay using the exit allowance from the orphanage and money from my part-time job. I didn’t even want to consider living close to Two Star Burger. I tried around Songju Station, but it wasn’t really that big of a difference. Eventually there was nowhere to go except up a sloping road. At the end of it was a rooftop apartment room. 

 

I dragged my rattling trunk up the iron stairs. Even though I had spent tens of years in the orphanage, I didn’t have a lot of luggage. I just had to organize my clothes and shoes and move the small furniture I bought from the recycling center into place and that was it. 

 

But maybe because moving is moving, it was already night by the time I could stand up straight. There was sweat running down my back even in the cold weather of February. I opened the iron door with a loud creak and the late winter wind came rushing into the room. I went outside and leaned against the guardrail, turning my gaze to the city of Songju below me. I found the place the orphanage would probably be. I followed the river and looked left. It’s on the left side of a clover-shaped sign. I couldn’t really see the orphanage amidst the neon signs and street lights. 

 

I turned my head and gazed at the rooftop apartment room. It’s really the size of a small room. It’s steaming hot in the summer, and a lacking, pathetic room where wind can blow through the cracks in the doors and windows in the winter. However, it was the only place in the world for me. A place I could be myself. A place where I could empty out my silly fears and hopes that others would criticize me for. A place where I could laugh and cry to my heart’s content. “I’ll try my best!” I shouted, facing the rooftop room. From today, the place in the city that was the highest in the atmosphere, the closest to the night sky was now my home.
